Saint Clare of Assisi is one of my favorite saints.  I had a cousin who passed away at a young age.  Her name was Andrea Clare.  She was both lovely to look at and lovely on the inside.   As a child I thought that if ever I would have children, I would name one of my daughters Clare. The name sounds so beautiful.  It feels beautiful.  It reminds me of my favorite piece of music, Clair de Lune, by Claude Debussy.   The name Clare can also be spelled Claire and Clair.

Saint Clare was born Chiara Offreduccio on July 16, 1194 in Assisi, Italy.  She came from a noble family. As a child, Clare was prayerful.  She lived at the time of Saint Francis. One day after hearing Saint Francis preach in the church of San Giorgio at Assisi, Clare decided to devote her life to God.  Saint Francis brought her to live with the Benedictine nuns in San Paulo.  Her father was disappointed and came to get her.  He wanted to bring her home.  He had plans for her to marry.  Clare however, pulled off her veil and showed her father that she had cut off her hair.  She clung to the altar of the convent church and proclaimed that she would have no husband but Jesus Christ.

Saint Francis founded an order of nuns for Saint Clare that was originally named the Poor Ladies of San Damiano.  This Franciscan order is now called, The Poor Clares.   There is a miraculous story involving the Eucharist that surrounds Saint Clare of Assisi.   The convent of the Poor Ladies came under attack one day.  In simple faith and trust in Our Lord,  Saint Clare held up a monstrance to a window.  The monstrance contained Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament.  The attackers fled in the presence of Our Lord and the convent and nuns were saved.

Saint Clare died on August 11, 1253.  She is the patron of television, eye diseases, gilders, embroiderers, good weather, gold smiths, laundry and needle workers.  Her feast day is August 11th.   A movie about the life of Saint Francis of Assisi features actress Delores Hart playing the part of Saint Clare.
